TENNIS.

GISBORNE CLUB

There was a fair number of ladies and gentlemen at the prettily situated Kaxti Courts yesterday afternoon, when some very interesting games were played. The chief •attraction was, however, the two semi-finals for tlio championship siiigle competition, and the game between AV. L. Coleman and W. J. Barlow r was especially interesting. Both men played well, Coleman, getting in some deadly smashes, while Barlow’s lobbing was a feature of the game. Coleman won the first set 6 —4, and Barlow secured the second by a similar margin. The third set was again won by Coleman (6- —4), Barlow' winning the fourth set by. 6 games to 1. Excitement ran high as the players commenced the deciding set. Coleman maintained his standard of play while his opponent fell away considerably, Coleman eventually winning the fifth and deciding set by 6 games to 1. The other game was played between C. L. Margoliouth and R. U. Burke. Burke got in some excellent work, but Margoliouth’s play was superior and he eventually ran out a winner in three straight sets,' 6 —o, 6 —2, 6—3. The final will bo played to-morrow afternoon between Coleman and Margoliouth and a rattling good exhibition of tennis is anticipated.
