DEGREASE IN COST. CONSUMPTION OF ALCOHOL. United Press Association, Copyright LONDON, Feb. 15. The inspectors of the Local Government Board stale that though the inmates increased during 1908 the indoor cost of paupers in London has fallen by £50,000. whereof one-half represents the Poplar Union. The inspectors comment on the consumption of alcohol in the provinces. One such ward cost £53 yearly per head. The inspectors agree that the Unemployed Act lias produced .a bad effect in the shape of a growing department being dependent on public funds instead of individual effort.
