The observatory at Pekin is the oldest in the Avorld, having been founded in 1279 by Kuhlai Khan, the first Emperor of'the Mogul dynasty. There are still in it three of the first instniments of observation. It is A r ery unusual for a man. to step off a train in broad daylight and then disappear completely., yet this is appearently has happened to Mr. MattheAV Todd, a Feilding baker, Avho was formerly in business in Palmerston North Avith Air. Charker. Air. Todd (says the Palmerston North correspondent of the “Dominion”) left Feiltling for that toAvn by the 10.30 train on Friday' morning. He Avas seen, to step off the train at the Terrace End and since that he has disappeared.’ • His family expected him back on the same day. and are very much exercised to knoAV Avhat has happened. Air. Charker, his former partner in business, received a telephone message from Foxton on Saturday night at about 9.30 o’clock, stating that the missing man had been seen at Foxton by a Air. BroAvn, but enquiries failed to corroborate the statement as to his whereabouts. Air. Todd is Avell-known to the guard on tlie Foxton train, and the latter states positively that he-did not go doAvn by the train. The police have the matter in hand.
