Archdeacon Walsh returned to Gisborne yesterday from Tokomaru. Inspector Munro, of the Health Department, is at present visiting Gisborne. Mr. and, Mrs. E. Chrisp will leave at an early date on 'a. visit to the Old Country. " . A Press Association telegram states that Chief Detective McGrath, of Wellington, who leaves for Christchurch. to take up duties of Sub-in-spector of Police, was publicly congratulated by the Bench and Bar on his promotion. Speeches eulogistic of Detective McGrath’s services were made by Dr. McArthur and Messrs. Riddell, Skcrrett, and Hordman. A pleasing little ceremony took place in the Orderly Room of the Gisborne Rilles at the Garrison Hall last evening, when the squad which gave the exhibitions of physical drill at “The Birth of the Empire” presented Mr. Harold Piper with a silver matchbox and sovereign case in appreciation of his kindness in supplying the music for tlieir displays. The 'presentation was made on behalf of the men by Corporal McLaughlin, and the recipient suitably responded.
