The Labor Council is starting acampaign against the Government policy of securing immigrants through the Salvation Army, as being characteristic of an attempt to lower wages. It was decided to hold public protest meetings.

Some of the/ unemployed participating in a march broke a jeweller’s window in the West End.
The depression in the Newcastle coal trade during tlie last few months is having a serious effect on the district. A large number of miners have Loom without constant work for months. The starting of relief works is urged.

DUNEDIN, Feb. 19
The Hon. -J. T. Paul has received advice from Sir Joseph Ward that he forwarded the following cable to the High Commisionor: “Please pay to Robert Blatchford, 44 Worship Street, London, for distribution through Bread Fund Committees operating m Great Britain the sum of £7OO to his account, being the first instalment of donations in respect of an appeal or the Otago Trades and Labor Council from all classes of the community, including large collections from the churches. The Otago Committee pledged. that no money would be spent, m distribution expenses. Further amounts will be forwarded later.
