PUBLIC RECEPTION IN DUNEDIN

DUNEDIN, Feb. 19
The Hon. J. A. Millar was tendered a public reception in the Garrisen Hall to-night in honor of his appoint ment to the position of Minister of Railways. There was an exception, ally large attendance, and the pro cecdings were very enthusiastic Speeches of a highly complimentary nature wore made by tlie Hon. Dr Findlay, tlie Hon. T. Mackenzie, tlie Hon. j. T. Paul, the Mavor (Mr. Me Donald), Mr. G. Wittv, M.P., Mr. T 11. Davey, M.P., Mr. J. F. Woodhouse, .and Air. D. McPherson. Ii: the course of his reply, the Hon. J A. Millar said he hoped to make tin railways pay interest without mine t : on in services, but if lie found thnservices had been running for a period of years at a Loss he would reduce tin service to meet the apparent wants of the people. By this means and by the utilisation of the Manawatu line in place of the Rimntaka incline hi hoped to be able to effect an enormoir saving in working expenses. If tin time came when it would he necessary to raise charges he would not hr afraid to say so on every platform ii the.colony, hut as far as he saw then was no necessity for that at present If it became necessary to make re trenchments, in regard to the .staff ho would do it, although it would L painful to -him to have to do so.
