GENERAL MEETING

"The Social Work” ,was the tonic of a discussion held last night by* the members of the local Young Men’s Christian Association. The employmeat bureau, boarding-house register relief branch, and generally the social s:de or a modern Association’s work was outlined by the general seeretarv • (Mr. Webster). Officers for the Literary and Debating Society were elected as follows : —President, Rev. W. Lamb • vice-presidents, Messrs J. R. Kirk and F. J Rowley ; secretary and treasurer, Mr. G. D. Malcolm; committee, Messrs C. Tattersfield, L. T. Burnard, and T. A. Coleman. Steps were then taken to inaugurate a membership campaign, with the aim of gaining 222 members by the i opening of the new rooyis at the end of March. Great interest was evinced in tbe proposal. It is proposed to divide the members into two sides, each with their own captains, lieutenants, and committees, to see which can gain most new members. A spirit of rivalry is introduced by each side taking a color, one red and the other blue. Every member gained becomes a worker for his side., and printed matter will be circulated, setting forth the Association’s work, labelled “Join the Reds’’ and “.Join the Blues.” The captain of one side will be Mr. J. Dawson, with .Messrs C. Rosie and G. D. Malcolm as lieutenants; and Mr. Harold Ennor was elected the other captain, with Messrs F. Colin Perry and H. Adair as his lieutenants. A colored flag will be hoisted over the Associations new rooms, showing which side is leading. The captain's and lieutenants are to arrange for the appointment of committees, and also the adoption of colors for their respective sides. Additional interest will he lent to the contest by the losing side partaking of a porridge supper at the final gathering of campaigners. Considerable interest was taken in the preliminary arrangements last % evening, and tbe members enthusiastically took up the various proposals to carry the movement to a successful issue.
