An attempt to raid the House of ] Commons in order to present Mr. 'path with a petition led to the arrest of 27 suffragettes, including Lady Constance Lytton, Miss Dugdale, a sister of Mr. Peel, M.P., and Miss Solomon, daughter of a former Cape Premier. In the House of Commons Earl Percy’s amendment to the Address-in-Reply, deploring that no effectual efforts have been made to restore the authority of law in Ireland, and to protect the elementary rights of Majesty’s subjects, was negatived bv.' j* - 336 tollS. In reply to Sir E. Carson’s cha!legne, Mr. Dillon declared that the Nationalist members of the House of Commons were willing to go to the disturbed areas and denounce and put down crime if they were authorised to promise the people that tlieir legitimate grievances would be remedied. He added that the effectual way to suppress outrage would be by the conferment of Home Rule to -» y ®' Ireland. Mr. Asquith, in reply to Mr. Balfour’s strong protest as to the prevalence of organised crime, said that the Government recognised its duty to enforce law in the black (?) areas, while aiming to bring the Laud Act •more int-o harmony with the requirements of the people.
