PRESIDENT AND PIANO.
A CURIOUS EPISODE
Tho curious fact that since Mdlle. railleries' marriage there "has been nO' piano at the President’s palace, the Elvsee, caused an embarrassing scene, says the Vie Paisienne, one evening du ring the King of Sweden’s visit. A well-known operatic star had been engaged to sing, and M. Massenet, the eminent . composer, had consented, in honor of the King and Queen, to ac.co inn any her. Suddenly it was' remembered that there was no piano in the palace, and in a great hurry an instrument was borrowed during dinner.
It-proved to be a qjieap instrument, and M. Massenet disgustedly refused to n]ay on it. On this Mme. Fallieres requested another well-known musician who was present, M. Isidore de Lara, to accompany the singer, and this lie did, as the theatrical advertisements say, “at a moment’s notice.”
