TE KARAKA RuAD RACE.

FAST TIAIE ESTABLISHED.

The third of a series of races for Air. D. J. Barry’s handsome silver cup was held yesterday, the" course being to' To Karakfl- and back, a distance of 22 miles. The weather conditions were excellent for there being practically no wind, and the roads, although very dusty, were otherwise in excellent order. Some 21 riders faced the starter, aiid they were dispatched- at intervals in order of their handicaps. The limit mean started away at a fast pace, and it was evident that the scratch riders would have their work cut out. Numerous obstacd.es were met with on the journey in the shape of mobs or cattle and sheep, and punctures and spills were not uncommon. At about a quarter-past five the first two men, Bell and Condon, appeared, -and a rattling finish occurred, the former just .winning by half Ha-wheel. 4 hen Whitehead presently finished, and bis arrival placed him as winner-or the . fastest time. He , accomplished the journey in the fine time of 1 houi oJ minutes, this being a local record toi the distance.
