TO THE ELECTORS OF THE LICENSING DISTRICT OF GISBORNE. Ladies and gentlemen— As objection seems to have been raised' to the nomination of candidates to the Licensing Commitrtee other than those agreed upon between the No-License party and the Licensed Victuallers’ Association, it 1 is necessary that I, as a candidate,, should explain why I consented to my. nomination and the objects I have in view in putting myself forward for election. They are as follows: 1. My purpose is independent of party or individual. 2. I fail to agree with the direction of any party to the main body of elecI tors as to who shall constitute their representatives. 3. I fail to agree with the carrying out of any settled policy, the details of which the electors at,large are not thoroughly acquainted with. 4. I fail to agree with any policy which has lor its object the permission of matters to remain as they are. I therefore advocate my policy as follows: 1. i want,, if possible, to see the solemn pledges that have been made .to improve hotel accommodation earned into effect. 2. I want, if possible, to see the accommodation and management of hotels, in the interests of boarders and travellers, receive more attention than is devoted to the bar trade. 3. I want, if possible, to see many ; details attended to that have hitherto been neglected, except in a few in- •; stances, viz., lire escapes, suitable housing of employees, etc. 4. I want, if possible, to remove 1 all ground for complaint from those 1 who use hotels for their legitimate purpose other than to obtain liquor. 5. I do uot, if possible, wish to in- : tsrfero with the already settled policy as to the hours of closing, and the granting of temporary permits to sell liquor. If the importance of the above objects is apreciated by the electors, as 1 am sure it will "be by those who have to use hotels when away from home, I may confidently expect to hear no objection raised to the cost of election, which, after all, is not a valid objection when a question of. principle ls involved. 1 remain, Ladies and Gentlemen, Your obedient servant, JAMES CLIVE COLLINS.'
