CONCILIATION COMMISSIONERS.
THE INITIAL MEETING. [Press Association.] AUCKLAND. March 3. The first meeting of the Conciliation Commissioner’s was held this morning, Sir Harle Giles presiding. When the dispute filed by tlie, hotels and restaurant employees came oil, Mr Long, representing the Union, said it was only a waste of time going on. He asked that the matter be referred direct to the Arbitration Court. Addressing Mr Giles, Mr Long said: “If you have the welfare of the mass of the workers of industrial trades unions at heart I call upon you to resign your position, because there is no likelihood to be an industrial agreement.” Mr Giles replied that he had no intention of resigning, and had no power to refer the matter direct to the Arbitration Court. This was contrary to section 42 sub.-section 1 of the Act. Mr Ivnox, representing the employ, 'ers, applied for an adjournment for three weeks, which Mr Long described as a deliberate attempt to defeat tlie aims of the Arbitration Act. He was promptly called to order by Mr Giles, who exercised his casting vote in granting the adjournment as requested.
