A SUSPECT ARRESTED

It was reported to the police late yesterday .afternoon that a dastardly outrage had been committed by a dark-skinned man upon a little cliikl, eight years of age, the daughter of a well-known resident of Victoria township. The services of Dr. Morrison wore -at once obtained for the child, and it was found that her right cheek was quite raw. her left eye badly bruised, and lie:' throat injured from the terible handling she had received, while there was evidence that a most serious crime had been committed. The- offence occurred on a vacant piece of ground at the western end of Derby. Street. Sergeant Hutton and Detective Rawle at once inquired into the case, and a clue to the suspect’s movements was obtained. Detective Rawle and Constable Dandy followed up the suspect’s movements, and'at about nine o’clock arrested a Cingalese at the Matawhero Hotel, where he was -in bed, and brought him to tdwn. He was identified by the child and other persons, and will be charged with the crime at- the Police Court this morning, when a remand will probably be applied for by the police. -
