BRITISH INDUSTRIES.
NOT PATRONISED BY BRITISH GOVERNMENT. PREFERENCE TO FOREIGNERS. United Press Association, Copyright. LONDON, March 8. Being heckled in the House of Commons concerning the use of Norwegian granite for the Rosyth docks instead of Irish or British granite, Mr. J. Burns (President of the Local Government Board) refused to grant the Admiralty £30,000, the difference in the cost of the Scandanavian and British, for the purpose of giving employment. The “Daily Express” reports that Mr. Gladstone, Secretary for Home Affairs, has ordered from French and Belgian firms many thousands of pounds’ worth of mail bag canvas. The difference between the British and foreign tenders was about half a penny per yard.
