POUAWA. [From Our Correspondent.] A very 'pleasant gathering took place at Mr. Thomas’ woolshed, Whangara, last week, when, upwards or fifty young ladies and gentlemen met to have a dance and a few hours’ social enjoyment. The shed was beautifully decorated with evergreens. Dancing was kept up with great spirit until a late hour, to the enlivening music of Mr. Pene Nolionoho. In the course of the evening songs and recitations were given by several gentlemen of the company. The Whangara Natives have keen busy lately getting their potato harvest. The tubers are turning up in abundance, but unfortunately the blight has made sad ravages, and it is doubtful if more than 20 per cent, of their crops will be of much use. There have been three tangis at .Whangara on account of the deaths of Mr. Hone Meko, M.P., a bov, and a lady of ifiiportance from Tokomaru, whose body is being taken to Te Kara ka for burial. „ The attendance at the-Whangara ■School is again well up to the average, although ,a large number of finished pupils left at the end of last session.
