GERMANY IN THE PACIFIC. A DISQUIETING STATEMENT. WARSHIPS ORDERED TO SAMOA. X 'United Press Association—Copyright. (Received March .15, 12.55 a.m.) NEW YORK, March 14. A Canton telegram to the “New York Herald'” states that- it is believed that Germany intends to annex an island in the Pacific and transfer her naval base thereto. The supposition is strengthened by the fact that the commandant of the German squadron at Canton shipped aboard a German steamer a quantity of food supplier, guns, ammunition, and material for the erection of barracks. The dost"nation oi the vessel is unknown. The British cruiser Flora has been ordered to watch the vessel. LONDON. March 13. A Reuter’s Berlin telegram states that in response to a request of the Governor of Samoa, three warships- on the China station, under the command of Rear-Admiral Carper, aboard the cruiser Leipzig, are now due at Apia. It is hoped that the presence of the warships will suffice to ensure the punisliri merit of the ringleaders and the prevention of bloodshed.
