COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. WELLINGTON, March IG. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day, Michael Hurlihy, a young man, was committed for trial on a charge of stealing from the person articles valued at £1 2s 6d. MANAWATU DRAINAGE. The Commission set up to investigate several important questions relating to the drainage of Poll-angina, Oroua, and Manawatu rivers has made its report. Four schemes were considered by the Commission, which recommends the cutting of a new channel for the Manawatu river, starting at Fishermen’s Point, then cutting in almost a straight line for Foxton, through the flats to the returned bed of the river, which it will cross; then cutting through a point at Matakarapa. This scheme would reduce the distance from Foxton to the hc-acls by two miles, and the cost would bo about £250,000. The Commission is of opinion that ihe State should bear some portion of the cost. ALLEGED CATTLE-STEALING. BILL THROWN OUT. NAPIER, March 16. At the Supreme Court to-day the Grand Jury threw out the bill in the ease of William Robinson, charged with receiving cattle stolen from Runanga ■station, on the Napier-Taupo road. A JUDGE'S SENSIBLE SUGGESTION. At the Supreme ■' Court to-day Mr. Justice Edwards remarked that it seemed to him it might be a good thing if a law were passed prohibiting youths, who had not reached years of discretion, from being allowed to frequent the vicinity of racing stables, as in such places a great deal of vice originated. The insurances on Messrs Sutherland and Co.’s tannery building and machinery, destroyed at Onehunga last night, arc as follows: £1515 in the South British and £'4o-50 in the New Zealand Office. The total insurances are £5865, and the approximate damage £l-4,000. THE FERRO CONCRETE COMPANY. AUCKLAND, MarclUlS.' The Ferro-Concrete Company of Australasia, which has carried out most of the new wharf construction in Auckland, and erected a number of buildings in the city, is to be wound up, in consequence of pressure of creditors. It asks to be allowed to complete, the present harbor contracts under a liquidator.

MINE MANAGER S BANKRUPTCY

The sworn statement of Arthur Herbert Gillen, mine manager, of Thames, who filed a petition in bankruptcy in February last, has been lodged with the official assignee. The {bankrupt’s liabilities are set down at £'4o9 9s 3d, and his assets at nil. He states he came to New Zealand from West Australia in March, 1902, to represent the interests of his uncle in the New Zealand Jubilee mine at Waitelcauri, and the Fame and Fortune mine at the Thames. He resided at Waitekanri for some months, and was then appointed manager of the two-mines named, at a salary of £250 per annum. After holding the position for three years some slight friction arose between the bankrupt and the directors, resulting in the bankrupt’s resignation. He was out of employment for 15 months, during which period his liabilities accumulated. In November ,1907, lie was appointed ■.manager of the Champion mine, holding the position for 12- months. He had made every effort to get ahead or lr-s debts, but had failed.
