FIRES IN PALMERSTON NORTH.

TWO BLAZES DISCOVEKED.

PALMERSTON N., March 17. A fire broke out in the tailoring establishment of Oollinson and Cunningham at 11.30 last night, and had a big hold when discovered. The brigade put in some good work and prevented the flames spreading. Collinson and Cunningham’s premises were completely gutted, and the stock suffered from water. Thacker’s boot shop adjoining was also damaged by water. At 11.10 this morning a fire broke .out in the Royal hotel and was not extinguished till a considerable amount of damage bad been done by fire and water. The fire originated in an unoccupied room where .spare bedding 'was kept, hut there is no idea as to how it started. The. insurances ar© £4OOO in the New Zealand office, £SOO in the London, Liverpool and Globe, and on tho furniture £ISOO in the latter office. The stock in Hallenstein Bros.’ premises beneath a portion of the hotel on fire was damaged by water, but not to a great extent.

Later.—The fire at the Royal hotel broke out again- shortly after 1 o’clock. The insurances on the stock areas are as follows: —Collinson and Cunningham £1056 in the Commercial Union office, £750 in the New Zealand office, and £SOO in the Northern; S. Thacker, £3OO in the New Zealand, £3-50 in the Commercial Union. The amounts on the buildings are: Collinson and Cunningham, £IOO in the Commercial Union, and £550 in the New Zealand office; Thacker, £459 in the New Zealand. Both buildings are owned by Waldegrave Bros. The second outbreak of fire at the Royal Hotel to-day practically gutted the building ,nnd also the New Zealand Clothing Factory premises adjoining The fire was got under control at 2.30 p.m.
