DETECTIVES’ SMARTNESS.

CAPTURE OF SUPPOSED BURGLAR (Press Association.) AUCKLAND, March 17. A smart arrest was effected by Detectives Hollis and Scott at Freeman’s Bay shortly before midnight, resulting in the recovery of a large quantity of stolen jewellery, and the discovering of a large collection of housebreaking implements. The subject of the arrest was a young man named Frank Maher. The detectives found upon his person a quantity of v jewellery, which it is alleged will connect him with several large burglaries in the city. Search of the man’s dwelling resulted in the finding of a large quantity of house-breaking tools, including skeleton keys, files, batteries, wires, revolvers, flashlights, and further jewellery valued at £OO, the latter being recovered from a chimney.
