CORRESPONDENCE

[Correspondence on publio matters is welcomed at all times, but it must be distinctly understood that this journal is in no way associated .with the opinions of its correspondents.]

DEAR BREAD.

[To the Editor .3 Sir, —A paragraph in your Tuesday’s issue stated that the Christphurch bakers intended adopting tho coupon system as from the Ist April/ and that coupons would be issued at 3s 3d per dozen. Yesterday the Gisborne bakers, including tho two co-operative companies (who promised t'o give us a loaf at a fair price) advertised an advance in price from 3s 6d to 3s 9d per dozen coupons. Why should bread. cost 15 per cent, more in Gisborne than in Christchurch? Allowing that it costs an extra .10 per cent, to land flour hero, the flour in a loaf is responsible for two-thirds of the cost of tho finished article, consequently we should only pay 6H per emit, more here than in the centres, where flour is delivered free of charges, unless wages are higher in Gisborne, which I doubt. We were paying 3s 6cl per dozen coupons before the present rise, which was a fair price, being about 74 por cent, abovo what Christchurch will do, and allows a fair margin of profit on extra outlay.—l am, etc., ,F. S. MALCOLM. Gisborne, March 18.

SWIMMING SPORTS

•Sir, —I am pleased to see that the Gisborne Swimming Club, with the aid of a few members, aro holding a sports meeting this afternoon in tho school bathe. A good number of competitors are taking part in the events, including swimmers who hold championship medals, and others without performances. I should like to see a large attendance of onlookers. Roll up, so as ■fo mako tho gathering a success, and enable the club to be financial for further gatherings of what is the clean sport, swimming. I am, etc., “'BREAST STROKE.”
