AUCKLAND CARNIVAL—A RECORD BROKEN.

AUCKLAND, March 21

At the Auckland amateur swimming carnival on Saturday, M. E. Champion broke the 440yds New Zealand record by 3 2-osec, doing the distance in smin 59sec. THE AQUATIC CARNIVAL. Beautiful weather and a large attendance greeted the Gisborne Swimming Club for their first carnival, held on Saturday, in the school baths. The officials all worked hard, and the events were got oft punctually. The handicapping , had been good, and several close finishes were recorded. During the afternoon a committee of ladies handed round tea, which was greatly appreciated by those present. Beforo the conclusion, Mr F. J. Rowley thanked all for the part they had taken in making the afternoon’s sport a success. He paid special tribute to Air. Colley, by whose efforts the prize money had been chiefly collected. The following were the results:

Relay Race (teams of four).—Gisborne Rowing Club 1, Gisborne Swimming Club 2. Four teams competed. The fast time of 65sec was recorded tor this race. x \ r Water Polo. —IV Bailey (capt.), J. This match caused ' much laughter, and was greatly enjoyed by the spectators. In the first spell both teams scored one goal, Bailey’s team adding two in the second spell, while their opponents failed to score. It is the intention of the committee of the Gisborne Swimming Club to hold a swimming carnival for ladies at an early date.
