MONTHLY MEETING
ihe monthly meeting of the Gisborne Hospital Trustees was held last evening. Present: Mr. J. TV. Bright (chairman), Hon. Captain Tucker, Messrs A. F. Matthews, A. Dewing, T. Holden, W.D.S. MacDonald, M.P., E. H. Mann, and F. J. Lysnar. Mr. Leslie Miller, electrician, London, under date January 14, advised the Board that the X-ray outfit had been dispatched. The apparatus has reached Gisborne, and is being fitted together. pr. Young wrote stating that the men employed on the railway works proposed to form a medical club, and to contribute a certain amount each week, so that they might be allowed free hospital accommodation. It was stated that there were 400 men in the camp, and they proposed to contribute Is per month each. Mr. Dewing said that if the offer was accepted any other body of men was entrled to the same consideration. Mr. F. J. Lysnar moved that the •offer be accepted. Mr. Mann moved as an amendment that the matter be held over until further information was supplied. Both propositions were withdrawn, and the chairman and secretary 1 were deputed to see Dr. Young with a view to obtaining further information. INSPECTOR-GENERAL’S. REPORT. Dr. Valintirie, Inspector-General _ of Hospitals, reported that he had visited the institution on March 6 and 7, and found the wards and annexes in nood order. The Board had properly erected a tent for the reception of typhoid cases, and if additional cases occurred he advised that another tent he erected. He was glad extra nursing assistance was being procured, and that the stores and drugs were being procured at reasonable rates. He agreed with the proposal to erect a new hospital, preferably on a new site, the present buildings being retained for chronic cases, or as an old people’s home. He regretted to hear that Miss Stewart had resigned her -position. ‘ She had done splendid service, which was appreciated by the officers of the Department. The Chairman said the report was of a most satisfactory nature. MISCELLANEOUS. Dr. Wilson was authorised to engage a man to assist in the wards. Dr. Wilson .reported that at the time of the last report 45 patients remained in the institution; 35 had been discharged ; none had died ;47 had been received since; leaving 57 now under treatment. The report was considered very satisfactory, especially ;>s not a single death had occurred, despite the-typhoid epidemic. ’ The visiting committee reported taht everything was satisfactory at the hospital. ■ The .visiting committee reported that they had inspected a site for a new hospital -on Whataupoko, but considered the land unsuitable. A site on the eastern side of Kaiti Hill was mentioned, and it was decided to make inquiries with a view to obtaining the land.
