GISBORNE SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

MONTHLY MEETING. Tim monthly ihbeimg of the -’^ s ‘ borne School Committee was held last evening. Present: Messrs J. Somervell (chairman-, G. Darton, A. Spence, G. Wildish, F. TV. Riacli, Revs. Grant, and Dawson Thomas. An apology was received from the Rev. G. Griffin and the secretary (Mr. TV. L. File). The headmaster (Mr. F. J. .Rowley) was also in attendance. CORRESPONDENCE.

Correspondence was received as follows :

From the Education Board reminding the committee that the financial year ended on 31st inst., and asking for the annual audit of accounts, and pointing out that a record si cub! be shown of all moneys spent by the committee. v

The annual meeting of house raiders will be held on April 25, when the av ditors expect to return all books and forms received.

From the Education Department forwarding Inspector Gill’s report on the secondary department of the Gisborne High School. Prom Mr. H. J. Grieve forsv-irdiug a tender of 3s 5d for school medals for 1910.—Received. From tlio Education Department setting out the terms for the year as follows:—lst term, schools close Friday, May 14, re-open Monday, May 25, 2nd term, schools close Friday, September 3, re-open Monday, (September 13; n idsummer term, schools close Wednesday, December 22, re-open Monday, Febiuary 7. . ' The Hawke’s Bay Education Board sent a list of applicants who had applied for the position of assistant at'tli# Gisborne School. They named 'hose whom they considered capable of filling the position, and asked the committee to select one for appointment.—The committee selected Miss H. M. Hogg, of Gisborne. Several letters were also received from the Education Board on Departmental matters. Mr. Rowley stated that he had sent in a list of those not attending regularly to the Education Board, naming some parents who might be prosecuted. So far he had not heard anything more about it. He did not think the truant officer was doing his work satisfactorily. Mr. Darton moved that the Education Board should be asked why steps had not been taken. The motion was adopted. It was resolved that all moneys received by the committee should go through the bank, and all accounts be paid by cheque. HEADMASTER’S REPORT. The headmaster (Air. F. J. Rowley) reported that the attendance during the past four weeks had been satisfactory considering the weather ; it had averaged 769, or 90 per cent, of the roll number, which is now <-o-. Inspector Smith visited the schoeol on his inspection visit, on March o ana and again on March 24, in connection with your application to the Boaid oi Education for particulars m two class rooms and for liyploplate. Classes m swimming and life-saving have _ been formed for scliol&rs in Standards o Hiicl 6 the instructors being members of the school staff. We have asked xor recognition of these classes unaer the Manual and Technical Instruction Act, but accordiim- to tlie regulations no capitation can be° paid for classes for girls. The capitation that can he earned will be about £lO, and I ask the Boaid to pay that amount to the instructors of toe classes;' ; as the classes are taken out ot school hours. The Board has refused. As there is no. expense connected with the classes it is not clear how vo can claim capitation. On T-liuxsday next we propose to hold a swimming sports; for girls at 1 p.m., and for boys immediately after. Several towel rollers were urgently needed in the various lavatories. Mr. Townley has fixed v, ire blinds, which are working satisfactorily. In regard to the rollers, the secTownlev to fix the rollers required, and thought it would have been fixed; lie would see Air. Townley again and have it attended to. THE SCHOOL SOCIAL. Messrs Darton and Wildish, social committee, reported that they had gone into the matter, and come to the conclusion that the sth and 6th of May would be suitable dates to hold the social, on account of the full moon. They thought it would be advisable to have the two, nights. The committee were agreeable as to the suitableness of the dates, and instructed the secretary to write to Captain Beere to see if the Garrison Hall could he secured for those dates.

Mr. Darton thought that everything should he arranged, and be in readiness for the incoming committee to take up. He moved that Messrs Somervell and Wildish approach the caterers for tenders for supplies of refreshments, and that as soon as the arrangements for the hall were completed the secretary should, have the tickets printed. It was decided that the price of the tickets should be: Double tickets ss, extra lady 2-s 6d. The tickets for the children’s night to be: Adults, with right to bring two children, 3s; children alone Is. It was then resolved that the committee should be formed as a social committee, with power to add to their number, to make all arrangements for the social. It was thought if the social was run righto it should bring in between £4O and £SO. After discussing several matters of minor interest, the accounts, amounting to £4 9s 3d, were passed for payment. The meeting then concluded. The next meeting, the last of the present committee, will be 'held on April 23.
