MR. MILLER’S CANDIDATURE. The Mayoral contest assumed an interesting position on Saturday, when Mr. W. Miller, who is an candidate, found that a business engagement would require him to leave Gisborne for a few weeks. Mr. Miller met his committee on Saturday evening, and placed the position before a large meeting of supporters. When originally asked to allow himself to be nominated for the illayoralty he hesitated to agree, being aware of business arrangements already entered into which might require his early presence in Australia. On Friday the occasion he had anticipated happened, and Mr. Miller at ... h ; in*the hands of ‘liis fair to contest the election unless he could personally see it through. His committee, however, would not hear of him giving up the contest, being satisfied that his friends would not allow Jris absence to be a cause for his defeat. The fact that Mr. Miller felt' bound to adhere to his engagement, which involved the interests of others, appeared to his committee as a further ground for renewed confidence in him as one who would always be true to the interests of the town. . Mr. Miller thanked his committee for the confidence shown in him, and it was definitely decided that he should be nominated for the Mayoral office, and the committee promised to do all in their power to secure his return. A general meeting of Mr. Miller’s supporters,' both ladies and gelTTTemen, will be held in the committee rooms, Williams and Sherratt’s buildings, on Friday afternoon next, at 3.30 o’clock, to discuss the plan of campaign to ensure Mr. Miller’,s election.
