THE ADDINGTON WORKSHOPS INQUIRY.
PUBLIC PROCEEDINGS CONCLUDED. [Per Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, March 30. The Addington workshops inquiry was resumed to-day. Mr. A. L. Beattie answered a number of questions put by the chairman. "Mr. Hampton, representing the workmen, addressed the Board, and summarised the evidence. He said that he hoped the inquiry would resiilf m the complete vindication of the character of the men, and lead to improved facilities being provide!, wh ii would make the Addhigton workshops the leading ones in the Dominion. Mr. Beattie also addressed' the Board. He stated that since 1900 the Addington workshops had been supplied with plant and machinery valued at £30,761, and additions to buildings costing about £IO,OOO. It had been fully recognised that the plant and accommodation were insufficient for the rapidly growing work, and the matter was discussed with the general manager. The funds available had been expended to the best advantage of the all the railway workshops, for others besides Addington required additional j iant. He gave figures showing that the cost of construction at Addington compared favorably with private firms. Mr. Ronayne’s informant’s allegations were, he submitted, unwarranted and unsubstantiated. The Chairman intimated that the public proceedings of the inquiry were concluded.
