FIRE IN GLADSTONE ROAD.

DRAPERY ESTABLISHMENT BURNED OUT. About ten minutes to seven o’clock last evening a fire broke out m the Wellington Cash Drapery establishment, conducted by Mrs. Loohs, next to Messrs Grundy and Shennan’s furniture warehouse, Gladstone Road. The fire started in the workroom at the back of the shop, and the flames quickly made their way through the roof. Some passers-by saw the smoke rising, and rang the firebell at seven minutes to seven. The Fire Brigade, under Superintendent Townley and deputy-Super-intendent Thompson at once turned out. and within a few minutes had four leads of hose playing on the flames. I'lie water pressure was exceedingly crood, and the firemen, by their prompt work, were able to confine the fire to the building in which it broke out. Smoke issued from the roof m c.ouus, and filled the street. Mr. Andrews oootshop, on the northern side, was in danger of catching fire, as it is m the same building as Mrs Loohs shop, but the Brigade gave the bootshop serious attention, and it was soaked with water, but only slight damage was done by fire. Mrs. Loohs shop was unfortunately burned clean out, and her stock was practically destroyed. The building was of weather-board, one-storied, and owned by Mr. J. Mawhinney, of Auckland and Gisborne. It was leased to Messrs Grundy and Shennan, who sub-let shops to Mrs. Loohs and Mr. Andrews. The building and fittings were insured in the .Guardian Office for £IOOO. Mr. Andrews’ stock was insured in the London and Lancashire Insurance Company for £SOO, and his furniture for £SO in one of the offices for which Messrs Coleman and Beere are agents. Mrs. Loohs’ stock was insured in the State Office for £llOO, and for £7OO in the South British Insurance Company, a total of £IBOO. . Mr. dark, jeweller, had a quantity of working tools stored in Mr. Andrews’ shop, and it is feared that they have been damaged by water.
