HOCKEY.

A NEW RULE

The following new rule is contained in “Rules of the (Game of Hockey,’ issued, under the authority of the English Hockey Association, which has just come to hand for the present year. It is provided, under the heading “Penalty Corner,” that “a player of the attacking team shall have a hit from any point on the goal 5 line, he may choose, and. at the moment of such hit all. the .defending team (their sticks and-feet) must be behind their own goal line, also all the attacking team must be outside the striking circle in the field of play.”; • Hitherto any breach of a rule by the defending team inside their own striking circle has been penalised by either an ordinary -bully or a. penalty bully. In future there will be no ordinary bully inside., the striking circle, but in their place will be awarded ..penalty corners. That is, the attacking side will be entitled to a free hit- from anywhere on the defenders’ goal line. The penalty for a breach is thus made more real than under the old rule.

It is expected' that the now. regulation will be .observed, throughout New Zealand next" season.. - - _ ,
