THE MUNICIPAL ELECTION
[To The Editor.]
Sir,—lt gave me great pleasure to read the letter appearing over the. signature of Mr. Riach. in your issue of to-day. I quite agree with him that the very best of material in the shape of intellect is required at the Co until table at the present time,., but 1 fail to see any superiority of intellect possessed by the present Councillors over what Mr. Riach terms the “raw recruits.” Is intellect only to be found in Councillors and ex-Councillors? Docs a young man not possess intellect ? Let Mr. Riach answer the question. Your correspondent also claims that competent men are required. True. But are tlie only competent men in the town to be found in the ranks of the present Borough Councillors? Let him look at the candidates offering, and he will find among them citizens who have seen Gisborne grow for the past thirty years and who know the requirements of the town thoroughly. Your correspondent also claims that the knowledge of Parliamentary procedure is required at the Council table. If it is, have not several of the candidates offering that qualification? At all ’.events,' as I agbee with Miteßiach, let us have men whose minds, are free from bias and who will work honestly and zealously for the public good.—l am, etc., M. G. NASMITH, Junr.
