MAKAUm ROAD RACE. FINAL FOR THE BARRY CUP. The last of the series of races for the silver' cup presented by Mr. D. J. Barry was run last evening, the course being from town, via Ormond road, to Makauri and hack, finishing at the corner of Grey Street, a .distance of about 12 miles! The conditions of the race were that the first, second, third, and fastest unplaced rider in each of the previous races was qualified to take part, and eleven competitors faced the starter, being despatched in the following order: —E. Morrow 60sec, N. Ingram 55sec, W. Bell 50sec, E A .McKenzie 45sec, A. G. Gerarrd 40sec, P. Fishbacli 35sec, J. King 30sec, fe. Whitehead 20sec, A. Anderson 15sec, A. Wilkinson 10sec, L. Wilkinson scr Condon (2osec) was also entered, but did not compete. . The roads were dry, but in. places very rough, and a heavy head wind-on the outward journey militated considerably against fast times being established The limit men made the most of their handicaps, and after a magnificent finish, N. Ingrain just got home by barely four inches from Joe King, who rode a splendid race, and led until within a short distance from the tape. W. Bell was third, twenty yards away, and ,A. G. Gerrard a similar distance away fourth. Anderson, Wilkinson, and Whitlvead in a bunch were the next three to finish, with the remainder tailed off. The actual riding time of the winner was 35min 39 2-ssec, hut King, the. second man, actually accomplislmd the journey in the fastest time. Morrow, Fishbach, and McKenzie collided with a trap on Ormond road on the wdy out and fell, fortunately escaping any serious injury, although their machines suffered to a considerable extent. The winner rode a Budge-V hitworth machine, fitted with Dunlop tyres, the same machine on which Mr. H. Anderson won the two miles event at" the St. Patrick’s sports meeting last week. The second'and third riders each receive a handsome gold medal. Quite a largo crowd of spectators fathered at the winning post to witness the finish of the race. The riders had ample space in which to- finish, as the committee, with commendable fore-thoiiD-ht. had provided ropes on each side of-the road to leave a clear course. A special word of praise is due to the police for their assistance in controlling the crowd, as a number of constables, in charge of Sergeant Hutton, were in attendance, and did excellent work in this direction. , , , , Mr. W. Howard acted as starter and timekeeper, Mr. R. H. Clark as_ handicapped', and Mr. F. J. Cowlrick as judge.
