The ‘'Spectator” states that whatever Australia’s and Canada’s offers may be they will be accepted with sincere pleasure, but the world would not realise the strength of ties uniting the .various communities of the Empire until the moment of peril arrived. The British people had determined that New Zealand’s gift should be treated purely as a gift, and in no sense a relief ,to the taxpayers. The Dreadnought offered would make assurance doubly sure. The Painters Industrial Union of Workers passed the following resolution at a meeting to-night:“That this union emphatically protests against the unwarranted action of Sir J. G. Ward and his Cabinet in offering a Dreadnought, as the country as retarded from want of funds to carry out the work of the Dominion, as is proved by the dearth of employinent here. 9 ’
