COMMONWEALTH POLITICS

MR FISHER’S POLICY CRITICISED. • COSTLY AND ELABORATE DEFENCE SCHEME.

...United Press Association— Copyright

SYDNEY, April 6; ;.;irhe State Treasurer, criticising Mr. Fisher’s policy, , declares that it pro-, yields' for an elaborate and eostl.v defence'scheme. It would be a sad day for Australia if the people were to bo ground down like the people of Europe. The Boers had taught them a lesson how they could make themselves rca-' sonably secure by an inexpensive system of defence.' Mr Fisher’s financial proposals were quite inadequate. It Was a serious matter for the States to be deprived of their fair share of indirect taxation, but it became more serious still to have the Jederal Government monopolising direct taxation. It is understood that Mr Fisher declines'to call Parliament together early. It will meet on May 26tli, which is slightly earlier than usual. ° 0 ~
