OUR DUTY TO THE EMPIRE
While heartily supporting Sir Joseph Ward in the spirited action he has taken, we must say that the incident ought to force upon the people of New Zealand and Australia that hitherto they have failed in their duty to the Mother. ..Country in this ,respect, that they have not borne their fair . share-ot the . cost of the-. Imperial. Navy,, which exists - for theif protection and. for the protection of their homes and trade just as much as it : does for the protection of the people and trade of Great Britain. The gift of a battleship . will help to make up for past neglect, hut cannot absolve us from, doing, our duty in the future.—“Taranaki Herald.
