THE PUBLIC SERVICE
A strong point made by the Opposition at the last general election was the imperative necessity for retrenchment in the Public Service, which had been allowed to grow out of all reasonable proportions in recent years. During the Liberal and Socialistic “boom” the Government hastened not only to add new laws to the Statute Book, but to create new departments in the Public Service. This was styled “progress” and any critic who ventured to point out that it did not necessarily follow that the Dominion would benefit by activity of this kind was promptly denounced as a hide-bound Tory who v'ished to keep the country continually in the background. It has now fieen discovered that a good many of the! new laws have acted simply a'.s a check on industry, and that-the new departments involve a large addition to our burden of taxation, while the practical benefits following from their etablishment have been somewhat difficult to trace.—Christchurch ‘Press.’
