Tho steamer Mahratta, of 5000 tons, grounded on the Goodwin Sands. Lifeboats took off the passengers. While the boatmen were salving rubber, tea, and rice, the vessel broke her hack. Tho salvers and crew were rescued with difficulty. The engineers worked up to their waists in water until danger of an explosion had passed. The vessel and cargo are valued at £200.000 sterling.
