SERVING THE EMPIRE.
The opportunity is at hand for the Government of this country to take a very effective step in putting our defence forces on a proper basis. Public feeling emphatically inclines towards the universal and compulsory system, and the sentiment is beginning to prevail that the Oversea Dominions can best serve the Empire by ceasing to be a source of anxiety to it. New Zealand believes in a fair subsidy to the Itritisu Navy, and' so far as land defences are concerned the supporters of universal service arc increasing daily. the public look to theOovernment for a lead.— “Manawatu Standard."
