NATIONAL DEFENCE
Universal military training has thing to recommend it. In the first place, it is the plain duty of every man to qualify himself to fight for the defence of his country. In the next place, it has been proved by experience—by the Swiss system, for instance —that a course of military training makes men better citizens and better workers. It improves their bearing and physique, and it stimulates their love of country. If Sr Joseph Ward had declared for universal trainino- lie would have made this month of March, 1909, much more memorable than it will be as the month in which New Zealand offered a battleship to Britain. —“Southland Times.”
