CHRISTCHURCH SITTING CONCLUDED. [Per Press Association.]
CHRISTCHURCH. April 10. The Timber Commission has concluded its sittings here. A. E. Elliott, Collector of Customs, gave evidence regarding the importations of timber from -abroad into Lyttelton for the two years ended 30th June, 1908. C. 11. Biss, district railway engineer, gave details of timbers need in Canterbury, and future requirements. VYm. Jacques, builder, considered the large size of Oregon should be allowed to come in dutv free, and a large export duty on kauri should be imposed. Robt. Allison, secretary of the Central Dairy Company, stated that by importing Oregon in shoots butter boxes cost Is 2.pi each, compared for Is 6d for white pine. J. E. Richardson, manager of Addington workshops, gave details of timber used. E. TV. Waller, timber merchant, stated that the mills could not produce timber at a less price than at present- The members of the Commission have left for.- Hannior. On Tuesday they leave for the West Coast via Otira.
