A RACECOURSE FATALITY.
DEATH OF A JOCKEY
[Per Press Association.]
CHRISTCHURCH, April 13
The inquest on William O’Connell, rider of Stronghold in the -Kildare Hurdles on Monday, was held to-day. Edward Scoullar, rider of Snip in the same race, gave evidence to the effect that- Stronghold failed to rise t-o the last hurdle and fell in front of Snip. Snip struck Stronghold and also foil, and rolled on the deceased. The reason Stronghold did not rise at the hurdle was that ho seemed to- be tiring. Tho medical evidence was that the deceased reached the hospital unconscious, and remained .so till his death at 5 a.rn. to-day. The deceased’s condition .showed signs of ccrebal hemorrhage, but it was deemed to be too extensive to permit of an operation. The post mortem examination disclosed extensive hoinorrhago within and without tho brain substance. A verdict of accidental death was returned.
At the request of O’Connell’s sister his body will be sent to Feilding for interment there.
