THE SAWMILLING INDUSTRY

IMPORTANT CHANGE IN FOREST REGULATIONS.

[Per Press Association.]

WELLINGTON, April 15. An important alteration of forest regulations affecting- crown land has been gazetted, it lias been a grievance among saw-millers that comparatively large timber areas have been secured by millers who owned small plants, and that those who went to the expense of installing machinery capable of dealing with a larg'l output obtained no corresponding advantage in cutting rights. Under the new regulations, however, the area will depend upon the horse-pownr of the mill machinery, the maximum for each mill of 8 horsepower being 300 acres. There is a scale rising to 1000 acres for nulls of between IP and 20 horse-nmvor. and 1500 acresfor mills of 30 horse-power and upwards. No change is made in royalty charges, but the whole of the forest regulations have been redrawn to bring them into harmony with the Consolidated Act of 1.908.
