Articles have been signed for a contest for the championship of England and a purse of £9OO between Gunner Moir, the holder, and lan Hague, the young Mexborougli boxer. The men are to box llic best of twenty throeminute rounds for the championship of England and £2OO a side—the minimum wager allowed under the new rule of the N.S.C. for heavy-weight championship contests. In addition, the N.S.C. hangs up a purse of £9OO. This is by far the largest purse ever offered by the.N.S.C. for a contest between two Englishmen, and it is in keeping with' the liberal spirit pervading headquarters, which is determined to be. as generous as possiblein order to encourage our own boxers
JEFFRIES THINKS JIM CORBETT IS KIDDING.
, Los Angeles, Cal., Jan. s.—James J. Jeffries, former heavy-weight champion and undefeated, although retired for five years, said to-night that J. J. Corwould have an easy time defeating the new champion, Jack Johnson, provided Corbett could stand the training necessary. Asked if lie thought that Corbett’was in earnest in saying that he would tight Johnson, the retired champion replied that he did not think lie was.
“Johnson does not class with men like Corbett or Fitzsimmons,” said Jeffries. “He would have no show to boat either of them if they could get back in half that form they showed when they hold the" title. CoYbett is not too old to train again and might lie able to got into condition to show some of bis oldtime form. If he did Johnson could not warm him. up.”
