THE WEEKLY HALF-HOLIDAY
We hold that Saturday is the natural day, so to speak,, for the lialf-holiday, and we have little doubt that it will be universally observed throughout the Dominion before the end of the second decade of the century, but at the same time wo arc convinced that a merely •partial observance of Saturday, the shops in* one district being closed while those in the adjoining districts may be open, would have a prejudicial effect upon commercial conditions. We cannot help wishing that the shop assistants could see their way to a change of. policy, oven at the eleventh hour, and unite in an appeal to the Government and Parliament for the passing of a new Act. making Saturday halt-holiday universal and compulsory. And why should not tradesmen join the assistants in asking for the legislation we have ~n"crested P Sooner or later they aic likely to have to accept the compulsory Saturday, whether they like it or not, .and it would be worth their while to ensure immunity from a .partial observance by unreservedly falling m with tho universal proposal.—'Dunedin Star.
