Dunedin and the Lawrence-Roxburgh -district are as loth to lose the sitb-r sidies of public money as Hokitika is, unwiling to; part with the, costly local gaol. .Now./Zealand as a whole calls upon .the Government ,to retrench, but when the superfluous local gaol is to he closed and the local political railway is ordered ,tq ,wait . .till., non-political ones are -pushed through, -it is another story. Otago will bring much pressure of various kinds against the Government-, but it is' to be hoped that - the Ministry will have strength enough to stand .firm. —“Evening 1 Post.” ; 1 j
