HAURAKI OYSTER FISHERIES

GOOD SEASON ANTICIPATED

[•NOIIVIOOS8V SSSIUJ IRIJ]

AUCKLAND, April 23. The oyster season will open on fc’aturday week next, May. Ist. Tho Inspector of >Sea Fisheries (Mr. J. P. Bennett), who has just completed an inspection of the beds in'Hanraki Gulf, reported that the oysters arc plentiful. The fish have spawned exceedingly-well, except at the Barrier, where, the crop is rather disappointing. Mr. Bennett is considering the advisableness of transplanting oysters from the more prolific beds to the Barrier, being of opinion that, by mixing the breeds, the quality and quantity will ho improved. • Mr. Bennett has suggested to the Department that the whole of the Gulf should lie gazetted instead of isolated beds, as heretofore, so as not to hamper the work of tho pickers, who, of course, are under the Inspector’s personal supervision.
