TEACHERS’ INSTITUTE.
ANNUAL MEETING-. The annual meeting of the Poverty Bay branch of the Teachers’ Institute wae held in the Gisborne Public School on Saturday morning. Air. J. Waueliop, president of the branch, occupied the chair, and there was a large attendance. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: President. Air. D. E. Leslie: vice-president. Air. J. Marshall; lion, secretary and treasurer, Mr. R- Cole; committee. Aliases Faubert and Craighead, Alessr.s Rowley, AVoodward and AEcLeod -.auditor. Air. A. Cuthberi; representatives on the Hawke’s Bay brand), Messrs Marshall and AVoodward. Air. J. Hislop. of Napier, was nominated as president of the Hawke’s Bay Branch ior the ensuing year. The annual report and balance-sheet were read and adopted. The balancesheet showed that the funds of the branch were in credit, and the report stated that "during the past year meetings were held at regular intervals, and aIT except the last few had been well attended. According to promise, the Government brought into operation an amendment to the Education Act, the object being to increase the stalls and salaries. Though the amendment was far from being perfect, no doubt a good attempt had been made to lighten the burdens of teachers, and the increased staffing in the schools would be much appreciated when all the positions could be suitably filled. The increase in teachers’ salaries ought to tend to make the teaching profession more popular. The amendment to the Superannuation Act treated members in a more liberal wav than the original Act did. and the retiring allowance was m every way more generous than it had been. lln annual conierence of the N.Z.K.T. was held in Dunedin last January, and tins branch was ably represented by Air. t. J. Rowley. A matter. tor .rret was the resignation ot the ate secretary, Air. J. Kinder, who hao held that position, ably and succostullj. for many years. -This branch enjoyed the distinction of haying as a membei evei v teacher in the district- qualified to be -i member, and in no small way was this due to Air. Kinder. The success of the public school cadet movement m this district had in a very great measure boon due to its energetic major Mr Kinder.
