ELECTION NuTiCES. MAYORAL ELECTION. TO THE BURGESSES'OF THE BOROUGH OF GISBORNE. Ladies and gentlemen,— At tlio request of a largo and influential body of ratepayers, I am a Candidate for the Mayoralty of Gisborne. The unfortunate fact that lam imperatively called away to Australia, and shall be absent for the next few weeks—at the very timo when, in fairness to my supporters, I should be standing the brunt of the contest I most keenly regret. When I was definitely acquainted with the fact that my absence at sueira critical time was utterly unavoidable, I requested my committee to release me from my pledge in the hope that another candidate might be found. ' After mature consideration, my committee unanimously decided to go on with the contest, in the expressed belief that the residents of Gisborne, who had in past years generously accorded me such unbounded proofs of their goodwill, would freely recognise that contracts entered into must be loyally carried out, and confidences reposed must be zcalouslv guarded, and would still further increase my debt of gratitude by further and greater proofs of their confidence in electing mo to the high office of Ghiet Magistrate. Having spent practically the whole of my life in your town and grown up amongst vou and having recently sat for upwards of seven years at your Council tabic, I claim to\ave a thorough grasp of the Borough requirements. If elected I promise to • devote my whole energies to the Promotion of your municipal welfare, so that when the end of my term comes I | ™ * have justified my selection by conscientiously carrying out the many unpoitant duties incident to the high office of Mayor of Gisborne. The various matters to my mind requiring immediate attention are: DRAINAGE.—A good and efficient scheme of sewerage for the whole Borough which, whilst effective, will not prove too burdensome to the ratepayers 6 ’in this connection I approve of the recent action of the Boiough Council in tlicir determination to obtain a further report from Mr. ■md when this is obtained 1 consider tln.t Hi. Mason s ™° Sa \ f “ Coal'd ad °of Ctl experts, all bomacle with our finpicial mid that such board dSntre t p eX S myself! tfSected, to have proposals submitted m a clear and businesslike manner for your approval at the very earliest opportunity. ROADS— I am convinced that a most would, if judiciously handled, bo rial roads in such an excellent state ot sum of from £6OOO to £7OOO per year expenditure on permanent formation that, with the advent of cheap metal posals are carried) we shall in the near roads and footpaths without increasoc contract of the Borough Council to yards per annum for five years at a of haulage for many years past nas loan of from £25,000 to £30,000 at quite sufficient to placo our main artevepair. that for many years to come a • would bo available from revenue for of our back or secondary streets, and (if the present county tramway profuture bo able to provide first-class taxation. I entirely approve of the take from the County Council 8000 haulage rate of 3s per vard. (The rate been 8s and 8s 6d per yard). OUTER HARBOR. —As the office of Mayor carries with it a scat on the Harbor Board, it is of course necessary that my views on this much-discus-ed question should be put clearly before you. lam convinced Jtthecon;t met ion of an Outer Harbor wond unquestionably be m the- lest interests, lot only of Gisborne, but of the. whole district. I am of opinion that thanks toour valuable endowments, shortly to bring in a largely increased rental, such construction can be undertaken with but litt.e risk of increased taxation. 1 The expenditure of from £300,000 to £500,000 must necessarily bo handled fi lith extreme caution; and I would advocate thal - the vei\ luhest and mo.. Complete information be obtained from reliable sources, and that thereafter a ’imilar coui-se to that suggested by Dr Mason regarding the drainage problem ,miliar cours ~.,0 en +lie lmnfl?. of an independent Vrnnl of Accountants*and Financiers. The recommendations of such Boards, if h md practicable, to bo placed before the ratepayers without further delay, in t o ear 1 afd understandable manner. In the meantime I entirely approve of he present channel being kept open and improved, for I am convinced that our :-v C ? will at all times prove a valuable asset, and that it will never cease to bo ised by the small coasters. If elected I shall advocate the construction of a River Lock at or near the mnvm-enco of the Waimata and Taruheru Rivers. Such a construction would make either river at all times and tides available for boating and other aquatic sports would abolish our abominable mudflats, and transform our rnci brinks ntn snots of beautv. This is a matter primarily tor tlic consideration Oi the iai-boi Boaixl A scheme, in my opinion, could be. devised for river improvement, the cost of which should not fall on the municipal ratepayer. I desire to express my sincere thanks and gratitude to my abends and supporters for the generous manner m which they have stuck „<> me mder such trying circumstances ;and I again assure them that, it dec tod I shall leave no stone unturned to deserve their confidence, and at the ipiration of mv term, confidently hope that a truthful summary .of such term fill bo: -DEEDS, NOT WORDS." y<mrs faithfuUy , WILLIAM MILLER.
