THE LAWBEHOE-ROXBUROH RAILWAY.
PREMIER REPLIES TO DEPUTATION. [Per Press Association.] DUNEDIN, APRIL 28. Sir Joseph Ward told the RoxburghLawrence railway deputation that the Cabinet had considered irrigation in Central Otago and the Lawrence-Rox-burgh line and the Otago Central Railway in connection therewith. The Government of the day had been forced into the prosecution of the Otago Central line on promises that it would be rev-enue-earning. Now other railways were being saddled with the Otago Central s deficiency. He hinted at the probability of the imposition of a higher railway rate in Otago in justice to the otlicr railways of the Dominion. The Government were willing to build tho Roxburgh railway if the people of the district proffered to guarantee the difference between the interest and cost of construction and the revenue returns. The responsibility was too great for Government -sanction of further prosecution, of the work without consulting Parliament. .
