THE GISBORNE CONTEST. Never before in the history of the Borough of Gisborne has the election of the Mayor and Council caused suck excitement jand speculation as to which candidates would ho successful, as the contest that took place yesterday. Speculation was rife as to who would head the poll for the Council, and outside His Majesty’s Theatre .all day was a busy throng' eagerly discussing each candidate’s chance. Cabs, motor cars, traps, and vehicles of all kinds were used to convey electors to the poll, and after the. shops closed at 1 p.ni., and again before 5 and 6 p.m., there was a steady stream of voters. The rain probably kept a great many people from the polling booths, hut the supporters Of- the various candidates were not disposed to take any, chances, and vehicles were sent as promptly as possible for tarrying electors. The poll closed at 7 p.'m., after a. busy day for the Returning Officer (Mr. H. M. Porter), who had as his deputies: His Majesty’s No. 1, Messrs 'H. E. Dodd, H. Bennett, and W.
