A conference has boon held between the Builders and Contractors Association and the Laborers Union, at which Mr Haile Giles presided, when the. parties arrived at a satisfactory settlement of the dispute. Representatives on both sides expressed unqualified satisfaction in the manner in which the Commissioner had carried ofit his duties. The labor representatives expressed their surprise and pleasure at the tact and business ability displayed by Mr Giles'.' There was no question he was the right man in-the right place. SHIP AND BOATBUILDERS’ DISPUTE. Tlie Arbitration Court has made an award on the lines of the agreement arrived at between the parties in the ship and boat builders’ dispute. A feature of the agreement is that Is 4d per hour is to be^paid for repairing work, meaning all work on a vessel other than that performed in the process of construction. SHIPMASTERS’ DISPUTE. The award in the ship masters' dispute provides for an annual leave of fourteen days on full pay. Wages are to bo as follows: Masters of steamers, 1001 tons to 1700 tons, gross Register, '£27 per month; between 601 tons and 1000 tons, £25; 241 tons and 600 tons, £22; 151 tons and 240 tons, £18; 25 tons and 100 tons, £l6. The above rates are not to- apply to the intercolonial and Home trade sailing vesse.;s, but the following shall apply: 601. tons net register and over, £l7 per month; 401 tons to 600 tons, £l6; under 401 tons, £ls.
