COMPULSORY MILITARY TRAINING.
DISCUSSED AT TRADES AND LAID OR COUNCIL. . [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, April 30.• Discussing compulsory military training at the Trades and Labor Council meeting last night, Mr. McLaren; t.P., said the matter was one of great importance, and should be for the combined unions. He moved that it be referred back to. the Auckland Union with a view of having it brought before the annual conference. Mr. McNaughton agreed with a. compulsory system of defence. The volunteer system was fraud and humbug. Tlie volunteers were doing good work, hut there was not enough of them. He advocated compulsory training because nine-tenths of the people ooukl not take up a rifle and hit a hay-stack. Mr. Dowdall said that most of the volunteers joined to curry favor with employers, or for private benefit. He was not a poltroon -or coward, uTit would not shed one drop of blood for the Empire until workers were placed on a class conscious basis and the State had taken over tlie machinery of production. The motion was carried.
