THE WATER SUPPLY STOPPAGE.

RISKS TO PROPERTY. ...As the) water supply has been cut off for some days and two serious fires have occurred within 24 hours, the Mayor (Mr. W. D. Lysnar) yesterday communicated with Mr. ITay, Borough turncock, and instructed liim to make all sj>eed to have the pipe line coupled up again. Mr. Lysnar pointed out that it was. one of the terms of the Borough Council’s contract with the Spiral Pipe Company that the contractors should keep the town supplied with water from the temporary intake, and that if it should be necessary to uncouple the pipe line, the' cessation' - of supply should npt lie longer than for 12 hours. If the town was deprived of water for a longer period than 12 hours, the borough had the right to put on whatever! hands were required to couple up again; The Inspector was requested to see that tbe terms of tlie contract were strictly followed, unless he was instructed to the contrary by the Council. : Mr. Hay thereupon had an interview with the contractor’s representatives, and reported that they would do their best? to connect the water up by tonight, and that they would not again disconnect without definite '' arrangements ■■■•■ being made. Tlie next disconnection they proposed making would, the Mayor learned* have probably involved a fortnight’s cessation of supply, and he requested Mr. Hay to ask the contractors, when; they anticipated a protracted job - in the work of lowering the pipe line at any of the river crossings, to either make a temporary connection or leave the old connection, untouched until a new pipe line was laid. If this was done .there should not be more than a few hours’ cessation of supply. The Mayor has informed, the contractors - that if they want any alteration from the. 12 hours allowed by the. contract he will call an emergency mceting.of the:. Council to consider their request.'
